Dear List,
I wonder, does anyone know the origin of the word 'Buddle'? I am fully aware of its use in the ore-processing industries, but have for many years observed its use to describe culverts under, or taking water away from roads in Devon and Somerset. Indeed, the short leats carrying water away from roads on steep hills are referred to in Devon dialect as 'buddle holes'.
Its obviously a dialect term, but can anyone help, preferably quoting references?
