"Sore Spots"

2007 Religion and Theatre Pre-conference

New Orleans, July 24th and 25 th

The Association for Theatre in Higher Education's Religion and Theatre Focus Group is hosting its first pre-conference to take place the Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday before ATHE's 2007 conference in New Orleans.

Theme
In the human body, soreness is a symptom of stress. It can indicate rapid growth or long neglect, the beginning of repair or the end of exertion. Religion both generates and heals sore spots. Not only institutional religions but all forms of spiritual practices and beliefs can be used to probe wounds, or as a salve; they can medicate, or can celebrate recovery. Through events including new play readings, round table discussions, a local tour, and a pedagogy workshop, this pre-conference will investigate the complex relationship between spirituality and performance.
