medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Paul's question was posed in terms of Terence and the responses thus far have followed suit. But, as reported in the PL's annotations to Hildebert, the saying is quoted by Cicero in his _De officiis_ (1. 30). Though Terence was at times widely taught in the western Middle Ages, it is possible that many became aware of the saying from its occurrence in the also widely copied _De officiis_. Studies of the latter's _Nachleben_ could therefore also be helpful in turning up instances of the saying's further use.

Best again,
John Dillon
