ALPSP Seminar

Success in Asia: strategies for smaller publishers

Friday 11 May 2007

British Institute of Radiology 36 Portland Place, London W1B 1AT

Chair: Eunice Walford, British Medical Journal Publishing

What are the opportunities and challenges facing the smaller publisher in
the complex Asian markets? What are the available options for selling and
marketing your publications to these key overseas markets? What can be
learned from the experiences of other publishers?

The practicalities of dealing with the more complex and unfamiliar Asian
markets can be daunting for smaller publishers and learned societies with
limited resources and thus a real challenge. For example, understanding how
to handle the cultural diversity, the language barriers or the different
business practices employed in Asia can present real difficulties.

During this meeting, representatives from smaller and larger publishers will
give an insight into how to increase your global reach in Asia, including
how to deal with agents and local reps if appropriate. It includes a
business update on emerging trends in some of the key Asian regions and also
provides an insight into the options available including outsourcing, if
appropriate. It demonstrates in a practical way how a greater reach into the
Asian markets can be achieved with limited resources.

This meeting will be of particular interest to management in small and
medium size publishers, as well as their specialist sales and marketing
staff. It will also appeal to those responsible for the editorial content of
journals and books, and how this can be tailored for an Asian audience.
