apologies for multiple postings

Hi Folks,

We would like to draw your attention to the following symposium to be held at the 2007 Goldschmidt Conference in Cologne, Germany August 19 - 24, 2007.    This symposium is being organised under Theme 14: Mechanisms of Geochemical Processes in Nature and Experiment.

S92: Mechanisms of metasomatic reactions

Metasomatism is clearly recognised in many geological environments where evidence for the parent phases has been preserved. The mechanism by which a mineral assemblage is either partially or totally re-equilibrated in the presence of a fluid phase is a fundamental issue in geochemistry and petrology. This session will assess the extent to which geochemical, spectroscopic and microscopic methods have contributed to our understanding of such mechanisms.

Conveners:  Daniel Harlov([log in to unmask]) and Timm John ([log in to unmask])

Keynote speaker: Håkon Austrheim

Utilizing diverse instrumentation such as TEM, AFM, SEM, EMPA, and SIMS, the goal of the symposium is to bring together modelers, experimentalists, mineralogists, geochemists and petrologists to discuss current advances with regard to the mechanics of metasomatism on both the localised as well as more regional scale.  This includes fluid-mineral interaction along grain boundaries as well as the role of dissolution-reprecipitation in promoting mineral re-equilibration.  Ultimately this session seeks to explore how specific effects involving metasomatism of minerals on the nano and micro scale can explain mass transfer and re-equilibration in rocks on the meter and kilometer scale.
