Gene is right that Brakhage is hugely important here, but he didn't invent 
such cinema in 1959 -- Kenneth Anger and Maya Deren are the most famous but not 
the only filmmakers who were exploring it during the 1940s, albeit in 
different modes, and others were there in earlier decades, depending on how one 
defines the field. A good starting point is P. Adams Sitney's classic "Visionary 
Film," especially the portions on psychodrama, lyrical film, and mythopoetic 
film.
