On the question of whether 'film language' is universal or culture specific, there are a couple of recent articles which may be of interest discussing the cultural specificity of representational tropes and strategies: Michael Wood's article 'The Languages of Cinema' in Bermann and Wood, eds. Nation, Language and the Ethics of Translation; and Negar Mottahedeh, 'Where are Kiarostami's Women?' in Egoyan and Balfour, 'Subtitles: On the Foreignness of Film'.
