The Centre for Philosophy and Design has been around (in a virtual sense) for several years, and had been responsible for a number of one or two-day events held in the UK, and finally a memorable event held on the island of Bornholm. I am very pleased that Per Galle and Denmarks Design School have taken up the challenge. -- David Durling ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ CEPHAD Thanks to the support and goodwill of the Design Research Society and of Danmarks Designskole, CEPHAD is now coming to life after a long silence. CEPHAD finds itself renewed, relocated and reinforced; ready to pursue its double purpose of (1) pioneering and consolidating the Philosophy of Design as a resarch discipline in its own right: philosophical inquiry into design; and (2) advancing and supplementing Design Research through its application of Philosophy of Design. As a visible result of the revival process so far, we are now able to present a web site of our own, at http://www.cephad.org. Here you can read more about the renewed CEPHAD, what it offers, and how you might contribute. Much remains to be done, but I think we have a good starting point. I would like to invite you all to join me in a discussion of how we should move on from here. Feel free to post your comments and suggestions to the CEPHAD list http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/cephad.html or to mail me directly <[log in to unmask]> Per Galle, Ph.D., F.D.R.S., Director of CEPHAD http://www.cephad.org ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ CALLS 28-31 May 2007: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Second Advanced International Colloquium on Building the Scientific Mind - BtSM2007 under the patronage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) This is to invite you to participate in the Second Advanced International Colloquium on Building the Scientific Mind to be held from Monday 28 till Thursday 31 May 2007 in Vancouver, BC, Canada. This unique event brings together innovative thinkers, researchers, practitioners and policymakers from across disciplines and sectors. We shall be honored by your decision to take part. THE ORGANIZERS The event is being organized by the US and France-based Learning Development Institute, a transdisciplinary networked learning community devoted to excellence in the development and study of learning, in close collaboration with the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in Vancouver, Canada, and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. RESTORING THE MIND AS A FOCUS OF ATTENTION The colloquium aims at giving the human mind the prominent place it deserves. In many endeavors, both in education and communication, the tendency exists to depart from too narrow and restrictive a focus, failing to take into account the interpretation that individuals make of the context in which they live and operate. Thus, education systems address specific competencies in the context of compartmentalized fields of knowledge. Likewise, communication efforts focus on behavior change in ways that are frequently unrelated to the larger set of preoccupations and frameworks of experience with which human beings live. Yet, to borrow from the work of prominent brain researcher Susan Greenfield, our neuronal makeup is such that we continually make and remake ourselves as we grow and personalize our brain through the experiences that we, as individuals, live through. Such experiences provide us with a diverse set of dispositions, or 'mindsets', that help us make sense of the world and enable us to interact with it in a purposeful and mindful manner. In addition to the scientific mind, different other mindsets can be identified, such as the entrepreneurial mind, the spiritual mind and the lyrical mind, to name but a few. We consider the scientific mind a useful starting point for a conversation among experts from different disciplines about the importance of mind and how to nurture its growth. That conversation ought to focus on how to change course in addressing fundamental problems of human learning through education and communication by focusing on the mind in an integral fashion. The scientific mind still being a somewhat elusive concept, one of the tasks of the BtSM colloquia is to build consensus around what the concept should look like and how the scientific mind relates to and interacts with other mindsets. The most distinguishing features of the scientific mind so far identified seem to focus on the disposition to not taking things for granted, questioning any given "truth," being inquisitive, seeking connections and patterns, and being relentless, methodical and probing in asking questions. Science is not a mechanism but a human progress, and not a set of findings but the search for them. Jacob Bronowski, 1956. (in: Science and Human Values) THE CHALLENGE The BtSM2007 colloquium in Vancouver will build of the work of the previous BtSM colloquium held in 2005 in The Hague (see for extensive and detailed documentation the BtSM2005 page at http://www.learndev.org/ColloquiumBuildingTSM2005.html). Besides, and considering the crucial problems of today's world, BtSM2007 will have a specific overall focus on Learning in the Perspective of Complex and Long-Term Change. Part of the colloquium will be devoted to critical debate and discussion around overarching questions and issues, including such crucial concerns as the dimensions and attributes of the scientific mind and that of other mindsets, the conditions that foster development of the scientific mind, its potential applications in multiple learning settings, practical ways to improve and complement existing implicit and explicit efforts to develop the scientific mind, and the implications of the scientific mind for innovative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. Because the issue of mindsets and mindfulness, and in particular of the scientific mind, is of potential relevance to such a wide variety of areas, the colloquium series has set itself the additional challenge of exploring this issue in the context of a number of thematic areas, including but not limited to such fields as scientific journalism, human rights and peace education, early childhood development, the crucial interaction between creativity, artistic spirit and scientific exploration, as well as the role of communication and education in relation to public health issues such as HIV and AIDS, care for the environment, the sustainable use of limited resources, and the development of a harmonious planetary society. WORKING TOWARDS CONCRETE OUTCOMES The purpose of the colloquium is to generate an environment for critical discussion and debate around the scientific mind, and to prepare the ground for research, further thinking and concrete action in this area. Participants are invited to contribute to the event by submitting specific proposals for a session or activity in their field. A workshop style approach will be adopted throughout the event to provide ample room for dialogue, exchange of experience, and to enable participants to work toward concrete final products. The establishment of frameworks for continuing the thinking and work around the scientific mind through post- colloquium collaboration will be encouraged and facilitated through the colloquium process. ORGANIZATIONAL DETAILS Venue: Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design, 1399 Johnston Street, Granville Island, Vancouver BC V6H 3R9, Canada. Further information: http://www.learndev.org/BtSM2007.html. CALL FOR PAPERS Deadline: Friday April 27, 2007. Contributions are welcomed for a new book addressing the construction and interpretation of virtual artefacts within virtual world museums and within physical museum spaces. Particular emphasis is placed on theories of spatiality and strategies of interpretation. The editors seek papers that intervene in critical discourses surrounding virtual reality and virtual artefacts, to explore the rapidly changing temporal, spatial and theoretical boundaries of contemporary museum display practice. We are especially interested in spatiality as it is employed in the construction of virtual artefacts, as well as the roles these spaces enact as signifiers of historical narrative and sites of social interaction. We are also interested in the relationship between real-world museums and virtual world museums, with a view to interrogating the construction of meaning within, across and between both. We welcome original scholarly contributions on the topic of new cultural practices and communities related to virtual reality in the context of museum display practice. Papers might address, but are in no way limited to, the following: - Authenticity and artificiality - Exploration and discovery - Physical vs virtual - Representation/interpretation of virtual reality artefacts - as 3D spaces on screen or in a physical gallery - Museum visiting in virtual space - Representation of physical museum spaces in virtual worlds and their relationship to cultural definitions of museum spaces. Please send a proposal of 500-750 words and a contributor's bio by Friday April 27, 2007. Authors will be notified by Thursday May 31, 2007. Final drafts of papers are due by Monday October 1, 2007. Please send your proposal to: Tara Chittenden Room 201 Strategic Research Unit 113 Chancery Lane London WC2A 1PL. Transmedial Interactions and Digital Games, Salzburg, Austria http://hcid.informatics.indiana.edu/ace2007/ held in conjunction with the 4th International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology Workshop Aims & Goals As virtual worlds and games grow in importance, present limitations in access to them limits their ability to achieve their potential. In persistent online worlds, peer actions and event changes have cumulative effects that are consequential to individuals, whether or not they are available, just as in real life. But unlike real life, where we have plenty of tools to help us juggle multiple responsibilities, access into virtual worlds today occurs through a single access point; active participation requires a significant stationary commitment. Even the most dedicated users have difficulty keeping up with the dynamic information. To remain active and included, users need better ways to communicate, cooperate, and coordinate. Transmedial access, in which players' access to a game and their characters/data is made possible across different devices, offers a promising solution to this problem. It also inaugurates a new category of interaction design: transmedial interaction. This workshop explores the state of the art of transmedial interaction in games, which today unfortunately is often at most mere afterthought. It provides a participatory environment in which attendees can chart new paths forward, from developing viable business models and understanding the technical infrastructure to developing critical vocabularies and evaluative frameworks. The workshop is intended for a broad audience, which will collaboratively achieve the following: - Review current state-of-the-art examples of transmedia interactions in entertainment computing, especially video games - Survey the technical infrastructure needed for transmedia interactions in digital games (e.g., feedback, adaptivity, etc.) - Understand how the strength and weakness of different media channels shape player experiences during transmedia interactions - Construct design guidelines for transmedial interactions and determine the components needed for successful and seamless transmedial interaction design - Consider evaluation criteria for transmedial interactions Submission We encourage participation from diverse academic disciplines including design, HCI, computer science,, media and game studies, strategic communications, and psychology, as well as industry experts and practitioners, for a total of 15-20 people. Specifically, this workshop will create a synergy among the following target audiences: - Online and mobile game designers interested in developing appropriate mechanisms to overcome the difficulty of designing for multiple media channels and cross-media experiences - Interaction designers and researchers interested in human-human and human-machine interactions across devices, including mobile and ubiquitous computing - Gaming industry pioneers interested in the exploration of novel ways to extend and integrate different media channels' capacities to create cross-device and cross-network experiences for their target customers - Entertainment computing marketers interested in identifying key challenges and solutions in promoting transmedial experiences Participants will be selected based on 2-4 page position papers that address workshop goals. Send submissions (PDF) to Shaowen Bardzell (selu [at] indiana.edu) with subject "ACE 2007 Workshop Submission" by March 30, 2007. Publication: Accepted position papers will be published on the workshop website. Depending on the outcomes of the workshop and the interests of the workshop attendees, the organizers may also coordinate further publications. http://www.ace2007.org/ Call for Papers and Projects: IDRP Volume II, Design + Livable Communities Interdisciplinary Design and Research e-Publication (IDRP) Call for Papers and Projects for IDRP Volume II Topic: Design + Livable Communities The Interdisciplinary Design and Research e-Publication (IDRP) issues this call for papers and projects for its second volume, to be released January, 2008.
