Dear Critters, It seems that I may have adopted a minority position when taking Jon's posting about Donnie Davies' list of 'dangerous bands' more seriously than others. As someone who has taught secondary school geography (and occasionally history) in various countries I'm only too aware of dangerous books lists and being obliged to select those that will get past the censors even if they arrive defaced (eg atlases with maps of Israel ripped out and book sections on population control removed, quite apart from heavy black lines obliterating particular words). In some schools where I have taught, all mention of the conflicts in Northern Ireland were deleted from the curriculum. While many have laughed at Jon's posting and variously described the list of bands as 'parody', 'irony', 'amusing' and 'fun', I would suggest that you are able to laugh as insiders because you 'know better'. Not wishing to irritate some of you, my regional co-ordinator described such responses as 'limited political answers'. Her point was that when such lists get into the hands of neo-conservatives, for example those in the American Bible Belt, the effects are not funny but disenfranchising. To pick up on Duncan's comment about the school governor arguing that the No Outsiders project has made her an outsider exemplifies the type of argument that neo-conservatives use. Some groups are trying to get the books used in the No Outsiders project banned - even though schools across the country have had various of the titles on their shelves for years. Yesterday, one blog on the project had some particularly unpleasant comments on the books and the project director http://www.moonbattery.com/archives/2007/03/homosexual_prop.html Perhaps I do take things a bit too seriously, but for those of you know the Institute of Education you'll be aware that there's not much to laugh about here. I'm also the sad sort who thinks that lists such as Routledge's catalogue could do with a bit of deconstruction! Thanks Jon for your emails - very thought provoking. She maintained this line in the face of some criticism. The band list is very, very amusing! -----Original Message----- From: A forum for critical and radical geographers [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of TAMAR ROTHENBERG Sent: 13 March 2007 22:42 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Changing Homosexuals into Ordinary People That list of bands that turn you gay is so off-base it had red parody flags all over it. I'm a geography educator based at the Institute of Education, University of London and an RA on an ESRC-funded project called No Outsiders: researching approaches to sexualities equalities in primary schools www.nooutsiders.sunderland.ac.uk <http://www.nooutsiders.sunderland.ac.uk/> . My geographical contribution is to 'enrich' the project by looking at the spatial politics of heteronormativity and homophobia. Following a not entirely accurate article about the project in The Observer on Sunday, 11 March 2007 'The prince married a man, and lived happily ever after' http://observer.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,2031223,00.html the No Outsiders team has attracted additional interest from religious and other groups some of which contend that the fairy tales (like the bands and presumably their songs) are dangerous and that the PI is 'wicked' (see links below). I wonder what evidence there is to support arguments that pop cult can make you queer.
