The current starting-point for Bengali genealogy seems to be Tamnoy's Genealogy at http://tanmoy.tripod.com/geneology.html but its focus seems to be Hindu Brahmin families, and it is a personal website.  It may, however, give pointers in other directions if the Brahmin focus is not appropriate.  I also found the Family History in India website at http://members.ozemail.com.au/~clday/, but this seems to be focused on European and Anglo-Indian genealogy.  If your friend has European connections in her family, they may enable better centralised documentation than what is available for purely Indian or Bengali families.

Not very helpful, I regret - if I come across anything else I will post it to the list.

Subject: Bengali genealogy and literature - references/sources ?

Hi everyone,
 hope some one can help.

I have a Bengali friend who has been trying to trace her family history in order to learn more about a distant relative who once had a piece of literature published.

Can anyone let me know of any ancestry databases which include Bengali genealogy ?
many thanks - caroline
