Subject: Working with volunteers in Libraries, Archives and Information
Services

Dear colleague

Do you have or are you planning to have volunteer staff in your
workplace?

If so, LLUK would like to invite you to attend a focus group to explore
and discuss the skills associated with successfully managing volunteers
and identify practical support materials that will help on a day to day
basis. This event, planned as part of the MLA/ LLUK Strategic
Partnership Agreement, will take place on Tuesday 27th March at the New
Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden, London.

LLUK is working in partnership with MLA, Volunteering England and
employers to identify the specific skills issues related to managing
volunteers within a library, archive or information service. This
information will feed into the work being undertaken through the Sector
Skills Agreement process that will develop action plans relating to the
sector's priority skills needs for both paid staff and volunteers. The
focus group will concentrate on developing practical support materials
that can be used in your library, archive or information service to
maximize the effectiveness of volunteers. The focus group will give you
the opportunity to review a draft of the support materials and to
contribute your knowledge to ensuring the accuracy and value of the
handbook to all its users.

LLUK, the Sector Skills Council for the lifelong learning workforce aims
to ensure that lifelong learning employers can recruit, retain and
develop highly skilled and effective staff, so that everyone in the UK
across all industry sectors are able to gain access to the skills and
knowledge needed to build a prosperous and inclusive society.

The workshop will start at 10:30am and finish at 2:30pm including lunch
and refreshments.

If you and/or colleagues wish to attend could you please complete and
return the attached response form to [log in to unmask]
<mailto:[log in to unmask]> by Wednesday 21st March 2007. In
addition, LLUK would appreciate your support in promotion of this event
through your own networks.

If you are unable to attend the event, but would like further
information on the handbook, or to contribute best practice information
from your own organisation to include in the handbook, please reply to
me at the address above.

Thank you for your support - I look forward to hearing from you!

Kind regards,
Sean Murricane
