Symposium on Refugee Narratives Friday, 20th April, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Wolfson Room, Institute of Historical Research, London The Refugee Research Centre and the Centre for Narrative Research at the University of East London are co-hosting a one-day symposium on Refugee Narratives. The day-long event will focus on presentations from four researchers working with refugee narratives in a range of different contexts. The four presenters will be: Martin Jones (University of Michigan) who will examine how narrative expectations impact on the determination of refugee status; John Nassari (University of East London) who will discuss the role of memory, history, nostalgia and contradiction in the narratives of Cypriot refugees living in London and Cyprus; Bettina Fábos (Miami University of Ohio) and Anita Fábos (University of East London) who will speak about the difficulties of representing multiple disrupted lives and layered memories in narrating refugee stories; and Katherine Goodnow (University of Bergen) who will critically examine the way in which refugee narratives are represented in the media. There will be considerable time allowed for the questions and comments of symposium participants. The symposium is limited to fifty participants. The deadline for applications is Tuesday April 10th. If there are remaining places after this date, applications may still be considered. The cost for the symposium is £20, which covers registration, morning and afternoon coffee, and lunch. There may be a small number of hardship funds available, on a first come first serve basis. (Please enquire.) Applications must be accompanied by payment.
