Business Unit

 

Group Public Affairs looks after BT's relationships with the UK Government and Parliament and is responsible for maintaining and enhancing BT's reputation with all those in Whitehall and Westminster. We look after lobbying on public policy issues of key commercial, financial and regulatory importance. We are also responsible for ensuring that BT's own management understands the political context in which the company operates and pursues a strategy designed to reflect the political situation.

 

Purpose of Role

 

To ensure the effective and timely communication of BT issues to the Public Affairs audience.

 

Key responsibilities

 

·         To lead on end to end Public Affairs for BT Payphones and BT Phone Books.

·         Lead responsibility within the Public Affairs team for communications to parliamentarians including:

 

·         Effective event management.

·         Support the work of the Head of Parliamentary Affairs in line management of BT Retail and BT Global Services.

·         Identifying new and innovative ways to communicate with the PA audience.  

·         Representation of BT at external events.

·         To build strong relationships internally and externally across the Public Affairs audience.

·         Monitoring of BT activity which is likely to impact on the PA audience; proactive and reactive communication of relevant issues/policy.

·         Effective budgetary management.

·         To provide effective Public Affairs advice to colleagues internally.

·         To monitor key parliamentary issues which impact on BT and communicate to relevant internal audience.

 

Qualifications

 

·         Educated to degree level

 

Person Specification (Skills/experience)

 

·         This role requires an enthusiastic self starter who is able to work both independently and as part of a team demonstrating excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.    

·         A good understanding of the current policy and political environment is essential.

·         An ability to translate complex issues into straightforward messages which are relevant to the external audience.

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills to ensure effective communication with the PA audience.

·         The Public Affairs team works across a broad range of issues, impacting on each line of business within BT and across the political agenda, as a result the post holder must be able to prioritise workload and be flexible in their approach.

·         Ability to persuade and influence at all levels both internally and externally is essential, as is a track record in the development and implementation of plans and strategies.

·         Proven track record against all BT capabilities.

·         Proven project/event management experience.

·         The post holder must also be proficient in the use of all Microsoft Applications.

 

This role will require some evening and weekend working.
