The Communication Unit (CU) is responsible for both internal and external communication activities, involving the public (visits to the ESRF, Open Days, general presentations of the ESRF’s activities, audiovisual material, …), the general and specialised press (national and international newspapers and scientific magazines, radio, television, Web, …), the staff of the ESRF (internal seminars, an internal newsletter, …) as well as the European scientific community (scientific seminars, posters, descriptive brochures, …).
 
THE FUNCTION:

As Head of the CU, you will be responsible for the further development of the ESRF’s communication strategy and communication tools, with the aim of enhancing the ESRF’s visibility to both the general public and scientific community. You will manage the budget and supervise the staff of the unit; there are currently four permanent CU staff plus two short-term appointments. The Head of the CU reports directly to the Director General.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

You have an appropriate qualification in science and/or communication (e.g. Masters or equivalent), or appropriate experience. You have a proven track record of scientific communication, with direct experience of science writing at the international level. Good managerial skills and experience are required, as well as the ability to lead and motivate. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are necessary with, preferably, a knowledge of other European languages, in particular French.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The ESRF shares a site with other major European scientific institutes (ILL, EMBL); it offers an exciting opportunity in an international atmosphere. New staff coming from outside the Grenoble area benefit from installation allowances. An expatriation allowance may be payable in accordance with specific regulations.
