The implications of the new research directions in Australia that Terry mentioned are quite sad and at the same time short-sighted. I don't know how researchers in Australia can push back except perhaps to adopt the strategy of Move On and start a website to gather letters from researchers around the world advising the Australian government on the negative consequences of its policies.
