Hi,

I'd already done my SRN training at the Naval Hospital RNH Haslar in Gosport over 3 years before the Falklands crisis started. At the time, we had military hospitals all over the place, but the occupancy of them tended to be nearly 90% in favour of civilians. that's where we got our experience from and of course we had the added experiences of being drafted (posted) worldwide.

I'm not really now in favour of specific military hospitals nowadays. A&E depts are well versed now with multiple casualties because of the nature of modern life. Disasters, whilst not commonplace add valued experience to the portfolios of A& staff and in my opinion, there are no worries about treating servicemen in "civilian" hospitals.

I'm not sure if this really is an OH issue but it could develop into an interesting debate with all sorts of strands.

But let me put something to the list. there is one thing that service life taught me. Adaptability. in terms of my nursing career, that experience enabled me, once I left the Navy to do some really interesting (maybe odd) things with my career that I don't think I could have done if I had trained in a civilian hospital....such as...:

mass vaccinations in the Moroccan desert, testing water supplies in Beirut, mountain rescue in Innsbruck, investigation into dermatitis on a French vineyard...mmmm and so on. I am pretty sure you Army, RAF and TA folk feel the same but I for one would love to know just how varied service medical experience really is and how it has helped them develop in OH.

Hi,
I was based in Aldershot, still training,(QARANC) we received most of the Paras returning from Falklands, along with Gurkhas and Guardsmen. Presenting with gunshot wounds, Trenchfoot, shrapnel injuries and terrible burns suffered by the Guardsmen. My memories then were these men/boys were only a little older if not the same age as me (I was 20) all had injuries, physical and/or mental. I guess its the same now. In my opinion, it definatley helped that they were able to come back to a Military hospital dedicated to treating service personnel and were amongst other recovering servicemen. I understand this isnt the case now. Apologies if this isnt in any way related to Occ Health, or perhaps it is. In as much as the services is regarded not as a job but a way of life, paid 24/7. So the environment, care and rehabilitation of a member would be considered particularly important? Perhaps a discussion for another forum.
regards
Bella Lloyd
