Ursula, I'm not sure how broad your interests are, but there's an enormous literature on subjects related to death and funeral practices. Some of the better-known works include those below (by no means an exhaustive list). There's a LC subject heading "Funeral rites and ceremonies" which could be worth checking in an online catalogue. I notice also a web-based Encyclopedia of Death and Dying here, but I'm not sure of the quality:
