medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
examples where crucifixes are literally "dressed"
like images of the Virgin?
A practice current and I think ancient in many parts of Latin America and Mexico and obviously from Spain:
Some crucifixes are made with a detachable corpus. This is carried in procession on Holy Thursday, then hung on the cross during the Good Friday devotions and eventually taken down and put into a glass "casket". These are images which have human hair and are dressed. Some are kept on view during the year uin a casket and are known as Jesus Entierra (the buried Jesus).
