medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Although it only deals with this practice briefly, Richard Marks's Image & Devotion in Later Medieval England (Sutton, 2004) might be looked at - especially chapter 7.

H B Walters, London Churches at the Reformation with an account of their contents (SPCK, 1939) contains many references to such items. Walters refers in his introduction (page 51) to "coats" for images of the BVM, St Katherine and St Ursula at various City churches.
