medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Question on "Dictatus
papae"
I was discussing Gregory VII's "Dictatus papae" with a
class this morning, and we found ourselves puzzled by the two clauses
that deal with the papal name: That his name along shall be spoken in
the churches and That this is the only name in the world
(translation from the internet medieval sourcebook). Does anyone have
a sense of just what this might mean?
