VENTURING OUT OF THE LIBRARY: MANAGING PUBLIC LIBRARY OUTREACH
18 & 19 April 2007, London

For a number of reasons potential public library users will not always make the first move in the relationship between a library and its community. Although some groups are natural users, others do not feel the library is for them or they simply just do not make the connection between what the library has to offer and where they are trying to go in their lives. A simple advertising campaign is unlikely to be effective in this case.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
In order to attract those who are not natural library users, a library must demonstrate how it fits in with the user's life. However, outreach is not natural to all library staff and even those committed to such an approach are rarely trained in how to manage the process of taking the library out into specific non-user communities. This course will provide participants with a way of thinking about and managing outreach.

BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
·	gained an understanding of outreach for public libraries
·	a set of tools and techniques to use in outreach
·	ideas on how to manage the process
·	undertaken a series of practical exercises to highlight key outreach ideas

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
·	Senior managers who are developing outreach services in response to government initiatives
·	Those library and information staff who are or anticipate undertaking outreach activities
·	Staff looking for a very pro-active element to add to their overall marketing activity

COURSE LEADER: TERRY KENDRICK
Originally a public librarian in Gloucestershire, Northumberland and Norfolk, Terry Kendrick has been an information and marketing consultant for over 20 years having worked on marketing planning assignments in seventeen different countries.
