THE NEW HOOK CENTRE PROJECT
An innovative new library and community centre

A tour of the new Hook Centre project in Chessington in the Royal Borough
of
 Kingston-upon-Thames Library Service.

Date: Wednesday 28th March 2007
Time: 6.15 p.m. for 7.00 p.m.
Venue: Hook Centre, Hook Road, Chessington

The Hook Centre replaces an inadequate branch library and community hall
on the same site in Chessington by the Hook shopping parade in the south
of the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames. This innovative £3,500,000
state-of-the-art project, part funded by the Learning and Skills Council
and serving the local Hook and Chessington community, brings together in
the same complex a number of different elements of community services: a
much larger new library, a learning centre, meeting room, a café, a
creche, a Citizen?s Advice Centre, a music/recording studio, a community
hall, a Council Help Desk, Chessington Community Care Housing Advice Desk,
exhibition space and other facilities. RFID self service, computers,
listening posts, full DDA compliance, energy efficiency and private
partnerships are other features of this multi-function complex.

A tour, arranged with the kind co-operation of the Head of Library
Service, Barbara Lee, will be followed by a talk by the RBK consultant
architects Dunlop Haywards and the project manager Scott Herbertson, RBK
Head of Leisure and Lifelong Learning, describing why the various elements
were included in the building. Refreshments will be available from 6.15
p.m.

This is a free visit, and all those who work or have worked in Library and
Information services in Surrey and the surrounding areas are very welcome.

The Hook Centre is situated on the A243 Hook Road, Chessington, Surrey,
about half a mile south of the Hook junction underpass on the A3 Kingston
By Pass (approached eastbound by the M25 J10 Wisley/A3 and A3/A307/309
from Esher/Hinchley Wood to Ace of Spades roundabout Cap in Hand pub;
westbound by the slip road off the A3 from London; northbound by the M25
J9 Leatherhead/A243 or A24/A243 from Dorking). Buses K2, 71, 465, and K4
from Kingston and Surbiton station, 465 from Dorking and 467 from Epsom
