Berlin-based Annett Gröschner is a prolific and versatile writer perhaps best known for her faithful and evocative portrayals of recent events and present-day life in the city. Her acclaimed work includes short prose and poetry, anthology and biography.

Ich schlug meiner Mutter die brennenden Funken ab, a collection of her school essays published 50 years later, graphically depicts Berlin life of the immediate post-war period, whilst Jeder hat sein Stück Berlin gekriegt (1998), one of several publications on the Prenzlauer Berg, is a vivid psychological portrayal of that particular district. Her reports on bus journeys in Berlin (collected as Hier beginnt die Zukunft, hier steigen wir aus. Unterwegs in der Berliner Verkehrsgesellschaft, which appeared in 2002), are inspired by the same interest in her surroundings and reveal a capacity for exact and revealing observation.

Among her recent works is a sympathetic biography of Peter Jung, son of Franz Jung : Ein Koffer aus Eselshaut tells of the child’s flight from Berlin to Vienna, then, after the annexation, to Geneva, Budapest and eventually New York; it is a story told with a sharp eye for the absurdity of the human relationships and the complexities of the émigré circles which formed the background to Peter Jung’s early life.

Annett Gröschner will read from her publications and discuss her work in progress.
