Finding Out About Our Visitors:

Introduction to Visitor Studies and Evaluation.

Course Description:

Museums that understand and listen to their users are more likely to succeed.  Consultation with users to inform museum planning and evaluation of visitor experience is becoming a key measure of good practice for all visitor attractions.

This workshop will share National Museums Scotland experience of the value of Visitor Studies and Evaluation through recent case studies.  It will explain the process of evaluation and share tools and scenarios for participants to use in their local situation.  There will also be an opportunity to try some techniques.

The workshop will concentrate on introducing this subject, sharing good practice through case studies and supporting skills development through practical exercises. 

Subjects to be Covered
General intro to Visitor Studies – what is it, why do we need it, why is it used and what are the benefits?

• Introduction to Evaluation – terms and definitions
• The 3 stages of Evaluation – before, during and after
• Evaluation process – practical steps
• Overview of tools and techniques
• Observation task
• Ethics and good practice

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

• Understand the importance of Visitor Studies and how it can benefit their organisation
• Identify the different types of evaluation and their purposes
• Plan an evaluation by working through the different steps of an evaluation process
• Use different tools and techniques to design creative evaluations
• Recognise good practise

Cost (lunch included): £ 10 GEM members;    £35 non GEM members.
