Hi Julius,
I can see both sides of the debate here. Having done a phd [supported throughout by p/t teaching] and now seeking a full-time post whilst still stuck as a busy sessional lecturer for two universities to make ends meet [resulting in total economic instability ie just being paid for the sessions you teach, not paid for a large part of the year as a result etc] an academic career is not the way forward unless you are entirely committed to it, and prepared to make financial sacrifices.. Having said all that, I love my work in film and Media and cultural studies, and wouldn't go back to office work for the world! But it might be hard - I would say impossible - to sustain a heavy teaching/research workload and also make films in your 'spare time'. Probably impossible if you are to remain solvent! So 'easier' and somehow related p/t work would probably be the best route to support yourself in your film-making career once you have perhaps studied film at undergrad level...
All the best with such decisions!
Ruth
