The impact of the Disability Equality Duty on employment practices in Further Education will be the central theme of the Disability Equality for the Workforce conference being hosted jointly by the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL), the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) and UNISON on 17 May 2007.

When the Disability Equality Duty came into force on 4 December last year, Further Education providers became legally obliged to promote equal opportunities for disabled people, including the workforce.  As a sector, Further Education is leading on disability equality when it comes to learners, yet there are a number of issues that the sector needs to overcome and address when it comes to the workforce. This conference is the first of its kind tackling the issues of disability and the impact of the disability equality duty on the workforce in Further Education. The conference forms part of the DfES-funded  Disability Equality Duty project which is focusing on the disability equality duty, disabled staff involvement and Trade Unions in Further Education.

The aim of the conference is to give delegates the skills and knowledge around disability equality and the workforce, to launch the UCU/UNISON guide to implementing the disability equality duty and to disseminate the good practice and findings of the disability equality duty project.

Delegates will hear from sector leaders and debate issues impacting upon the workforce in Further Education.

Who should attend?

This conference is open to all from the FE system – colleges, sixth-forms, work-based learning providers and adult and community learning centres –including Trade union stewards, staff governors equality reps, disabled members in UCU and UNISON, HR managers, heads of personnel, Principals, senior management with responsibility for the disability equality duty, equality and diversity practitioners and disability co-ordinators.

This event is free to UCU/UNISON members and will cost non-members £100. To obtain a registration form for the event please email Sian Davies Disability Equality Organiser UCU/UNISON [log in to unmask]
