If I recall, some time ago, we had a similar request from someone who worked for a Hostel regarding using the CCTV in the hostel to monitor the activities of staff eg that they were smoking on site. If I recall the CCTV can be only used for the purposes stated in the CCTV Policy. I note that the UCL Policy http://www.ucl.ac.uk/efd/security/documents/cctvpolicy.doc does include in its Policy: "facilitate the identification of any activities/event which might warrant disciplinary proceedings being taken against staff or students and assist in providing evidence to managers and/or to a member of staff or student against whom disciplinary or other action is, or is threatened to be taken." I have no practical experience of this but I would imagine that in order to use the CCTV for disciplinary proceedings the breach of discipline of which the individual is accused would have to be serious. Otherwise, presumably, the CCTV could be used as a fishing expedition for minor breaches. I think that it was also pointed out that the individual might be told that it had been noted from CCTV that they were doing X - but without proceeding to formal proceedings. The implication that more serious breaches could be determined by CCTV. We have used images to identify individuals carrying out vandalism - and work on the basis that the images become personal data at that stage. Individuals are then told this data is held on them and comes under the Act etc etc We have had a request to provide evidence to prove the time a staff member was on site - this can be available from viewing the camera at the entrance. Can anyone give me some quick advice on whether this is acceptable and what action needs to be taken if this route is taken - if indeed it can be. Should we have had anything in place in advance of this - the IC's office says it's only at this point that we would need to take action but should it be in the Staff Handbook? Apologies, I'm sure this is a very basic topic for many of you but it's not one I've had to deal with before If anyone is willing to share their CCTV policy with me I'd be very grateful also Thanks in anticipation Bridget Brook Central Services Manager Sparsholt College ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ All archives of messages are stored permanently and are available to the world wide web community at large at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/data-protection.html If you wish to leave this list please send the command leave data-protection to [log in to unmask] All user commands can be found at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/help/commandref.htm Any queries about sending or receiving messages please send to the list owner [log in to unmask] Full help Desk - please email [log in to unmask] describing your needs To receive these emails in HTML format send the command: SET data-protection HTML to [log in to unmask] (all commands go to [log in to unmask] not the list please) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ All archives of messages are stored permanently and are available to the world wide web community at large at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/data-protection.html If you wish to leave this list please send the command leave data-protection to [log in to unmask] All user commands can be found at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/help/commandref.htm Any queries about sending or receiving messages please send to the list owner [log in to unmask] Full help Desk - please email [log in to unmask] describing your needs To receive these emails in HTML format send the command: SET data-protection HTML to [log in to unmask] (all commands go to [log in to unmask] not the list please) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
