VLEs in art and design:  interactive course support tool or stand alone 
document store?

Thursday 1 March 2007, University College for the Creative Arts at 
Canterbury

This one day workshop is aimed at those interested in sharing experiences 
of using VLEs in art and design settings. Speakers will explore the 
following:
•	Does art and design lend itself naturally to the use of online 
learning/teaching? 
•	The pros and cons of using VLEs in art and design colleges.
•	How VLEs can be used in different and innovative ways to support 
teaching and learning, i.e. not just as a bulletin board and location for 
course documentation, reading lists and lecture notes. 
•	Hands on experience of using VLEs and evaluating good and bad 
design.

Session 1 : Case Study: How can a VLE complement teaching in an art and 
design discipline – Annamarie McKie, University College for the Creative

11.30	Group discussions: Good and bad design – live case studies ?
12.30   	Lunch
13.30	Session 2: Practical session: What elements are needed to make a 
successful VLE? Using Moodle, Andy Kirk, JISC 
Developing useful online tools to use in Blackboard,  Mick Eadie, AHDS.  
14.45	Session 3: Case Study: Alternative approaches .  Jane Shaw, 
Northumbria University and Wayne Barry, Canterbury Christchurch University.
