Paper Conservation Training, Birmingham, 22 February 2007

Dear list subscribers in the UK and nearby,

This message publicises a forthcoming paper conservation training day open to any archivists, records managers or paper conservators who might be interested in attending. Please will subscribers forward the message to anybody they know who may be interested but who isn't a list subscriber.

On 22nd February the Preservation & Conservation Group of the UK's Society of Archivists is holding a training day on aspects of Paper Conservation. It will be held in Birmingham at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, beginning at 10:30 am.

There will be five presentations during the day including a site visit. Topics addressed will include:

Leafcasting paper repair
Triage and treatment of two collections of letters and loose-leaf archives
Using fascicules to house loose-leaf archives
Assessment and treatment of text suffering from iron-gall ink corrosion
Toning paper and tissue using fibre-reactive dyes
Using a box-making machine

The collections treated include a collection of the letters of the famous Swedish polymath Carl Linnaeus (2007 being the tercentenary of his birth), and a collection of marriage licenses from the 18th and 19th century.  We'll visit Birmingham Central Library to see the box-making machine in use.  It is hoped that one or two suppliers may be able to attend the day although none have been arranged yet. The Group will also hold its AGM during the day.

Cost of the day has been kept as low as possible: £25 for Society of Archivist members and £30 for non-members. It's possible the fee may be increased by £5 for each category; the fee can be confirmed if needed by telephoning the Society's office on 01823 327030 (UK).

Full details of the day are available from the Preservation & Conservation Group's webpages accessible via http://www.archives.org.uk/thesociety/specialinterestgroups.html and a booking form is available from http://www.archives.org.uk/careerdevelopment.html. If there are any people interested in attending, we respectfully ask that they might send in a booking form as soon as they can to help with administration of the day.

We hope to see those who can make it at Birmingham! Thank you very much for your help,

Dominic Wall
