Hi Steve I've not seen direct querying because most VOs who want to pre-select on the status first will make use of the Freedom Of Choice tool (https://lcg-fcr.cern.ch:8443/fcr/help.cgi ) - this is a VO policy enforcement tool for resource selection. I am not sure how individual users within a VO make use of the results or create a sub-selection for themselves but I will find out or ask if it is possible. Certainly this tool allows one to factor out sites that are in maintenance. Others on this list may know more.
