Hello Leighton,

Thank you for the reply.

1) One can test spatial normalization results buy correlating the surface boundaries of the registered image with template brain, i.e looking for a match in the dimensions as well as the anterior portion and the posterior portion in all the three orientations, or if I have fiducial markers in the SPECT image then check that after spatial normalization the fiducial markers are on the brain boundaries and not anywhere else. SO when I say "better" I check all these parameters and then decide the result.
2) your suggestion of creating a template is good, but even to create a template you have to get all the images in Talairach atlas, which you can do through spatial normalization, so spatial normalization is a preliminary step to create template and not the later step.

Not a problem to ask questions as we are all learning.

Hi there Abhinay,
What do you mean by 'better'? I wouldn't have expected the difference between the SPECT and PET templates to significantly affect the spatial normalisation of low-resolution I-123 SPECT.
Is the distribution of your I-123 ligand very different to the FDG PET or HMPAO SPECT templates? If so, you may benefit from generating your own template - if you have enough I-123 scans.
Sorry to return more questions than answers.

Subject: [SPM] Spatial Normalization

Hello Everyone,

Issue:-Spatially normalization of the SPECT images of radio-ligand I-123 in AD patient and HC subject.
Results:The result of Spatial normalization using PET template is better than using the SPECT template.
Reasons that I think:-SPECT images on which I am working on are not clear and very hazy and the SPECT template gives a clear shape
of the brain as compared to PET template, so in my case PET template suited the better...I can be wrong!!

Could any one please provide any other probable reasons for it?

Thank you all in advance.

Sincerely,
