I am now in a position to update you on where we are in the process of achieving funding approval for RAPID-WATCH. At its meeting on 29th November 2006, NERC Council has agreed in principle to earmark £15.1M for the RAPID-WATCH programme for the period 2008/09 to 2013/14 subject to the following requirements being met: - availability of funds (which may be influenced by the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review in 2007); - successful evaluation of the existing observing system by independent experts (to take place in February 2007); - submission to and acceptance by SISB of a more detailed work plan following the independent evaluation. This is a good outcome. I am grateful to the writing team for putting the proposal together (Bryden, Marshall, Sutton, Wood & Marotzke). Regards, Meric p.s. apologies if you got this twice - overlapping e-mailing lists. -- Dr. Meric Srokosz, Room 254/43,National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS), Empress Dock, Southampton, SO14 3ZH, UK Tel:+44-(0)23-80596414 (direct line); Fax: +44-(0)23-80596400 e-mail: [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] http://www.noc.soton.ac.uk/JRD/SAT/pers/mas.html Science Coordinator NERC Rapid Climate Change Programme http://rapid.nerc.ac.uk/
