The Psci-com list was originally set up with the intention of being a discussion forum as well as a notice board. The Welcome message that new subscribers receive says that it is a "forum for discussion of any matter relating to public communication of science and public engagement with science and technology (PEST) .. [and a] gateway to information on current science communication issues, events, workshops, conferences and literature." I too feel that the list would lose a valuable component if it became simply a notice board, useful as that might be. The list has got quite large (over 1200 subscribers) so maybe this inhibits a more informal exchange. What do others think? My feeling is that a greater emphasis on formal announcements inhibits the trivial small-talk essential for comfortable, friendly communication. In this context, even my own previous message now seems sniffy and unfriendly. Sorry, Alice Bell. Remember last time I apologised to you, at a BIG Event several years ago, after clumsily frightening you in your front-row seat, while using tennis balls as clubs and missiles in my 'best demo' competition entry, entitled 'Targeting your audience: a quick history of ballistics'...? I'm no academic but experience has shown me that science communicators do need to communicate with each other, and that true communication involves receiving as well as transmitting; sensitivity as well as information.
