magic snap

the baby makes a sound

repeats a noise

that sounds like something

something happens

the people that look after it

are pleased

think it sounds like something

they recognise

they make an offering

food toy drink

same sound same offering

that's how we learn

about magic

the power in words

how it works

ask God

pray

occasionally things happen

may happen anyway

but hey

sometimes the answer is no

and the more we learn

the more words grow

acquire references connotations

they didn't start out with

so lets go with the magic

it used to work

words are the thing

they get you anything

you talk

of love of hate of peace

they are so abstract

they are practically meaningless

you have to wrap your spell

in words that point

in the right direction

eventually it comes right

maybe

if it don't

you didn't asked correctly

if it does

that's magic
