First, a very belated thanks to those-Peter and Caleb-who had kind words for
my last snap. Here's the latest:

The Silence at the End of a Marriage 3

The mile he tried to walk was not a mile,
and the shoes he wore turned out to be his own,
and the years it took, the years this should have been
as clear to him as the phony welcoming smile
he knew he couldn't trust, all that while,
until his son was gone and he was grown
old and more tired and bitter than when
he lost what he'd called his soul in that first trial,

*those* years gathered like dust beneath the last
flames of what had been the light his eyes
gave him to see when he was called to choose-
and he realized now he hadn't wanted to choose-
but when he was called he felt compelled, and his eyes
lit up the future, but fire doesn't last.
