Surprised at this news, I made enquiries of the Cabinet Office. I gather
their own GovTalk website is not one of those to be axed. Linda
Humphries of the Delivery and Transformation Group has asked me to post
this response to the list:

"The information in The Times is based on the Transformational
Government Annual Report
(www.cio.gov.uk/transformational_government/annual_report2006/index.asp)
. It summarises a review of 951 websites that are funded by the main
central government departments rather than the 2,500+ public sector
websites.

Of the 951 sites reviewed by their departments, 90 have already closed
and 461 are planned to close. The Times’ figures are based on an
extrapolation of the ratio of how many sites have agreed to close and
those that are definitely to be retained (e.g. departments’ corporate
websites) – 26 to date. There are still 374 sites to be reviewed.

The information currently held on sites that are closing will be
migrated to Directgov, Business Link or the departments’ corporate sites
as appropriate. This will result in a reduction of the number of
locations in which information for citizens and businesses is held,
rather than reducing the amount of information available.

Kind regards, Linda

There’s a Cabinet Office press release here that reveals all:

http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/newsroom/news_releases/2007/070110_ciost
rategy.asp

It’s all part of a “Transformational Government strategy”, apparently.

I read this in the Times today.

delete.gov.uk

The Government will announce that it is going to close 95 per cent of
its own websites in a drive to make important information more readily
accessible for internet users. Officials insist that the mass cull,
which will save £9million, is necessary to tidy up the Government’s
presence on the internet.

Has anyone heard anything more about this? Do we know what will be
deleted? And will the information just disappear or will it be stored on
a site such as http://www.official-documents.gov.uk/?

Many thanks

Clare
