Cultural and Literary Translation: New Directions

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Colloquium Theme

Translation Studies has now entered the mainstream of academic teaching and research not only in Europe but in the wider world. While the practice of translation is seen as a popular career option attracting large numbers of undergraduate and postgraduate students, the development of translation theories is proceeding in exciting new directions in a fast-growing area of academic research. Translation will be considered in relation to the following topics:

Postcolonialism
Ideology
Deconstruction
Gender
Ethnicity
Regionalism
New media

These aspects of translation studies, as well as many other related issues, such as versions (‘transcreations’) vs. ‘faithful’ translations, will be explored in the Colloquium.

The Confirmed Keynote Speakers are:

French

Professor Mary Ann Caws is currently Distinguished Professor of English, French, and Comparative Literature at the Graduate School of the City University of New York

Hispanic

Dr Jeremy Munday of the University of Leeds is author of Introducing Translation Studies (Routledge, 2001) and Translation: An Advanced Resource Book (2004), co-authored with Basil Hatim as part of the Routledge Applied Linguistics series.

Italian

Professor Lawrence Venuti is Professor of English at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Submission of proposals

Proposals should be about 400 words long, written in English and sent to Dr L. H. Davies at the address shown below. The deadline for submission is March 31 2007.

Papers should be in English and intended to last between 20 and 25 minutes (the exact recommended length will be specified later).

Texts discussed should have originally been created in a Romance language. Comparative approaches are welcome.

Publication

A selection of papers given at the Colloquium (and other accepted articles on the Colloquium theme) will be published in two issues of Romance Studies to appear in 2008. Published papers may be written in English, French, Italian or Spanish.
