Dear all Has anyone considered how this might be affected by what charges are allowed to be made information requested under the Freedom of Information Act? I believe there is a growing body of case-law on this topic. It might be as well to have an eye on it. Consultants etc are probably generally happy to pay for a service, but non-commercial inquirers may be less so. Nick might want to run the idea of differential charging for residents and non-residents past his legal people. It might not be allowable under FOI. (Incidentally, I say 'FOI' rather than the Environmental Information Regulations advisedly. There is advice from the Information Commissioner's Office that 'in the main, a record of historical sites [e.g. an SMR or HER] would not be classed as environmental information'.) At NYCC, we are having to review our charging policy in light of directions from corporate level. As part of this, one idea that has been suggested has been to charge non-residents of the County area for research inquiries. Does anyone else charge on this basis? If so, could they provide us with details please? Has anyone considered this and rejected it? If so, again, please send us reasons so we can try and think through all angles. thanks best wishes Nick Boldrini Historic Environment Record Officer Heritage Section Countryside Service North Yorkshire County Council County Hall Northallerton DL7 8AH Direct Dial (01609) 532331 Conserving North Yorkshire's heritage - encouraging sustainable access www.northyorks.gov.uk/archaeology This email is personal.
