Dear Nicola, having worked previously in a museum that didn't have a separate learning space, and I now work somewhere that has, it is extremely useful and means that the children (and adults!) can work without disturbing other visitors! Guildford House is a 17th century town house and we use a separate building in the courtyard (the Brew house) for these activities. However, because of the nature of the beast, as well as for school sessions the Brew house is also used for other events; art workshops, lectures, private views etc. Unfortunately the space used is on a first floor (the ground floor is taken up with a small storage room, toilets and stairs at either end of the building). We do have a first-floor kitchen and it is extremely useful as a self-contained unit.

Our education space has lots of minuses (first floor, sloping floor, steep stairs) but just to have a separate space is not to be sneezed at!

Hope this is helpful comment.

Kind regards.

Subject: best examples of museum or gallery learning spaces

Does your museum or gallery have a separate learning space which is either
a) just for organised groups to use, e.g. for school groups to do activities in
or
b) for general visitors to use, which has (for example) interactives which people can use to find out more about aspects of the collections (e.g. the Clore Interactive Gallery at Manchester Art Gallery or the Under 5s Gallery at the Laing in Newcastle)?

I'm looking for examples of learning spaces which take an innovative approach and which work really well, for a presentation on "Discovery Rooms in Museums" for museums in Hungary.

So if your museum has a learning space which you are really pleased with, please get in touch!

However, not all museums and galleries have room for a separate space, and so I'd also be interested in hearing about any innovative and unusual low-tech (i.e. not computer-based) interactives which you have as part of your exhibitions.

Best wishes

Nicola
