Museum Management

10am – 4pm Tuesday 23^rd January 2007
Kew Bridge Steam Museum

Trainer: Christine Beresford   
Case Study: Kew Bridge Steam Museum

This course will give an overview of how to reach the standards set in section 1 of the Museums Accreditation standard. This will cover:

• Contextual management: Constitution, board roles & responsibilities.
• Resource Management: leasing etc, risk assessment & management.
• Planning: Forward planning, financial planning, Security & Emergency planning, Acquisition & Disposal Policy.
• People Management: numbers of staff, access to professional advice, induction, board management, volunteer management, supervisory management, workforce planning, developing people, performance management including age discrimination and addressing issues of disability and cultural diversity.

This day would be particularly useful to not only managers but also trustees.

Engaging with Audiences

10am-4pm Monday 19^th February 2007
Foundling Museum

Trainers: Janet Bell & Audiences London        
Case Study: Foundling Museum

This course will give an overview of what is needed to reach the requirements of the Accreditation standard set out in Section 2 of the Museums Accreditation standard.

The first session of the day will be provided by Audiences London and will cover:

• Why collect information from your users and non-users?
• What sort of information should you be collecting?
• What are the methods available for collecting information?
• What tools are available for collection and analysis?

The second session of the day will be led by Janet Bell and will cover:

• Identifying Barriers to access: Undertaking audits, customer feedback and consultation (particularly with disabled people). Provision of information on available toolkits for self assessment.
• Access (physical, sensory, intellectual, cultural, social): Key issues and sources of information regarding barriers to access and creating and maintaining accessible museum environments and visitor facilities for a broad range of users;
• Making information accessible: interpretation & collections & site information.

This course will give an overview of what is needed to reach the requirments of the Accreditation standard set out in Section 3 of the Museums Accreditation standard. It will cover:

• Welcoming customers
• Tourism, leisure and hospitality
• Understanding your customers
• Delivering service excellence 
• Communicating successfully
• Providing information and advice
• Meeting specific needs
• Dealing with difficult situations
• Boosting business

Managing Collections

10am-4pm Thursday 1^st March 2007
Gunnersbury Park Museum

Trainers: Christina McGregor, MDA & Francis Halahan, Halahan & Assoicates
Case Study: Gunnersbury Park Museum

This course will give an overview of how to reach the standards set out in section 4 of the Museums Accreditation standard.

The first session will be led by Francis Halahan and will cover collections care and management issues, including:

• Acquisition & Disposal Policies
• preventative conservation
• collection condition overview
• environmental monitoring
• environmental control
• housekeeping
• planning for improving collections care

The afternoon session will be led by Christina Mcgregor and provides an introduction to the basic principles of museum documentation. Consideration is given to the benefits of good documentation practice, and participants will examine the content of a simple but effective system. Topics covered include:

• SPECTRUM,
• Object entry,
• Accessioning,
• Marking and labelling,
• Cataloguing,
• Location and movement control,
• Exit, Loan and Retrospective Documentation.
