The 21 page briefing (with many illustrations and screen shots) covers the etymology and developing use of the term over the last 20 years before looking at some particular applications - image metadata and metadata embedded in text files. Emerging standards such as RDF and XMP (a new one on me) are also covered and there are many references to further sources of information. Well worth a look.
