Dear Colleagues,

*Apologies for any cross posting*
Bologna

Please be aware that there are now just a handful of places remaining for the UKCGE Bologna Discussion Forum: Proposals for Doctorates in Europe after the Brussels/Nice Seminars, taking place on Tuesday 6th February at The Priory Rooms, Birmingham. This is a repeat of the highly successful forum held in London earlier this week.

The forum will focus on the European debate on Doctoral Programmes under Bologna and the potential impact on HEI policies and practice in the UK. Concise, documented Briefings on the EUA Seminars in Brussels (October) and Nice (December, 2006) will be presented by two active participants, clarifying the relevance to UK Research plc of the key issues likely to impact on UK doctoral programmes under Bologna.

The cost of the forum is £65 per delegate. Places can booked by completing the attached booking form and returning it either via email to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> or by fax to 01543 308604.

Retention & Completion Rates

Please also be aware that booking is also now open for the UKCGE Workshop on Postgraduate Retention & Completion Rates taking place at Goodenough College, London on Thursday 8th March.

Low retention rates and long completion times for doctoral students have been an issue virtually across the globe since the early 1980s. In the UK, of course, the Research Councils have sought to address these matters by imposing targets for completion and penalising those providers of doctoral education who have failed to achieve them. This has put the onus upon institutions, departments, and supervisors to retain as many students as possible and to ensure that they complete on time. The aim of this session is to enable participants to identify and share good practice in the retention of doctoral students and in completion times. The objectives are:

*
	To review the international research evidence as to why students do not complete or delay completion.
*
	To review potential strategies for improving retention rates and completion times;
*
	To evaluate and where appropriate improve provision within their own institutions/departments or in their practice.

The cost of this workshop is £145 for UKCGE members and £185 for non-members (this includes lunch and refreshments). Bookings can be made online by visiting: http://www.ukcge.ac.uk/workshop_booking_form.html.
