Hi Robert, Yes, you are undoubtedly correct and the figures are an under-representation but they are all that is available. As HEIs will be using self-classification....i.e. numbers of students who tick the "dyslexia box" then there is bound to be some variation but it is reasonable to assume that all students who declare as dyslexic will have at some point had a formal diagnosis. The 2005 report by the LSC and the Dyslexia Institute (The Incidence of Hidden Disabilities in the Prison Population) distinguishes between dyslexia and other literacy difficulties and discusses this issue at length: they find that there is evidence for a higher incidence of SpLDs within the prison population. There is no need for any students with dyslexia to make themselves known to their universities if they do not want to do so. The HESA figures may therefore be underestimates. 2) As far as I am aware there is no check, by HESA or anyone else, on whether different universities use comparable definitions of dyslexia. 3) My opinion is that different educational psychologists are quite likely to come to different conclusions in assessing the same student. There is no definition of dyslexia which can be used to give predictable conclusions from assessments. Even if there were, it would take a long time for it to be universally applied. 4) I have no experience myself of dyslexia assessment in prisons or through the probation service, but I suspect that criteria used in those fields may be significantly different from criteria used in HEIs. I have absolutely no evidence, but I wonder whether there is a confusion between illiteracy and dyslexia in this area. I'd be glad to receive comments on those points.
