Dear List,
does anyone have any clues to the nature, purpose and origin of a number of air shafts marked on the 1878 1:2500 Ordnance Survey County Series plan of Bodmin. Have made enquiries with Bodmin Museum and Library but to no avail. It may be coincidental, but the air shafts are commonly located close to some of the old quarries in the town. Perhaps related to a drainage system for the quarries? No known metalliferous mining in the immediate town area.
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Brian Poole.
