medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Here is a link to the news bulletin (in Italian) about works on the tomb of St Paul at S. Paolo fuori le Mura released by the Vatican Press Office this morning :

A large (2,55 x 1,25 x 0,97 m) marble sarcophagus (4th cent.?--implied rather than stated) was found beneath the high altar and will now be made visible through a new opening, along with a view onto parts of the Constantinian basilica. It seems that the reconstruction after the 1823 fire was done with little archaeological refinement and surprisingly poor documentation. There are not too many details on the sarcophagus itself, and it seems it was not (able to be?) opened. Perhaps someone more adept than I at interpreting archaeologist-speak might further explain the report for us.

The "patriarchal" basilicas will now be called "papal", and there will be various modernising works at S. Paolo, including, unfortunately, the security screening which makes a visit to S. Pietro so less welcoming than before. -- Paul Chandler
