Building a diverse workforce

LB Brent / PATH National partnership

MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR LIBRARY STAFF

A 13 day course over twelve months

This practical and interactive course is designed to give library staff the skills and awareness necessary to effectively lead and manage their teams and services.

Accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management.

 Aims:

  • to provide affordable quality management training for BME library staff to address the issue of under representation
  • to enable library services to truly engage with local communities by recruiting, training and developing staff who reflect those communities

 

Story so far:

  • Supported by MLA London and LLDA
  • Built on existing proven partnership between London Borough of Brent and PATH National
  • Course devised and delivered by library managers and trainers who have substantial experience of libraries
  • Training subsidised by PATH
  • Contains library specific elements on current and relevant issues

 

Course Content:

The course will cover:

    • Staff and team management (2 days)
    • Effective communication (2 days)
    • Managing performance
    • Coaching and training
    • Managing and controlling resources
    • Presentation skills

Plus the following library specific elements:

    • Community engagement
    • Delivering customer focused library services
    • Performance management and the role of libraries within local government
    • Marketing and promotion

Cost

£500 in 2006/7, £500 in 2007/8 – total per delegate £1000

NB The actual cost of the course is around £2500 per delegate but PATH have provided a substantial subsidy. Subject to further funding to be confirmed, this cost may be reduce further.

Dates

The first course (or courses) will begin at the end of January 2007 and it is envisaged that there will be approximately one days training per month.
