2007 Joint Technical Symposium in Toronto, Canada http://www.jts2004.org/ On behalf of the Co-ordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations, the Association of Moving Image Archivists is pleased to announce that the 2007 Joint Technical Symposium will take place June 28-30, 2007 in Toronto, Canada, at the Isabel Bader Theater. The 3-day event is expected to draw 400-500 attendees from around the world. The Joint Technical Symposium (JTS), first held in 1983, is an international gathering of organizations and individuals involved in the preservation of image and sound materials. Staged tri-annually, the JTS provides the foremost opportunity for technical colleagues and those interested in the field to meet and share knowledge. Panel discussions, presentations and screenings describe, examine and critique the most important technologies and methods for the long-term conservation and restoration of the world’s audio-visual heritage. Attendees traditionally include film, video and audio archivists, asset managers, laboratory technicians, engineers and other preservation specialists from a broad cross-section of institutions responsible for the conservation of feature films, television (national, regional and local), independent productions, news film and amateur productions. At JTS 2004, keynote speaker, Leon Silverman, said: “The real challenge is at our doorstep - and its name is data. As the world of film, video and digital becomes data-centric, the tasks of conserving, restoring and migrating artifacts originating in the traditional media, as well as in “media-less” data, become increasingly complex.” We all benefit from the participation, both formal and informal, of the presenters and the audience at the JTS. For newcomers to this vibrant, dynamic and committed community, JTS 2007 will provide an invaluable opportunity to learn what is happening in the field. Anyone interested in the field of preservation, or in becoming more acquainted with the JTS, will find a wealth of documentation generated by JTS 2004 – presentations, reports and transcripts – currently available at http://www.jts2004.org/ Under the auspices of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Information Society Division, participating organizations include: the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA), the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the International Federation of Television Archives/Fédération Internationale des Archives de Télévision (FIAT/IFTA), the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA), the International Council on Archives (ICA), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and the Southeast Asia-Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA).
