Dear Colleagues,

We should like to draw your attention to the following forthcoming conference in London

The Industrial Context of Migrant and Diasporic Cinema in Contemporary Europe

13 January 2007
Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies
, University of London

The conference addresses the specificities of production, distribution and exhibition of migrant and diasporic cinema in different national and cultural contexts. Renowned filmmakers and media practitioners reflect on their professional experiences over several decades. They discuss funding and distribution, the role of festivals and transnational networks, public policy and the special characteristics of niche, crossover and global markets.

The conference organisers are pleased to announce that the programme has been finalised. It is advisable to register for this conference as soon as possible. We are looking forward to welcoming an excellent panel of speakers, including the filmmakers John Akomfrah, Abdelkrim Bahloul; diversity consultant and producer Parminder Vir, OBE; founder of the script-funding initiative BABYLON and director of Scenario Films Gareth Jones;  film producer Ralph Schwingel from Wüste Film; distributor Eve Gabereau from Soda Pictures;  and Thierry Lenouvel from the Amiens Film Festival.

In conjunction with the conference there will be film screenings and a Q & A session with Abdelkrim Bahloul at the Ciné Lumière, French Institute London, on 12 January 2007. Conference delegates will be able to buy tickets at a reduced price (£5 for one film, £7 for two films).

The conference is a collaborative event organised by the AHRC Research Network Migrant and Diasporic Cinema in Contemporary Europe. It is hosted by the Media Arts Department at Royal Holloway, Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds, the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies and the French Institute in London.
