GRADUATE CENTRE FOR EUROPE CALL FOR PAPERS Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference The Future of Europe: Identity, History, Politics and Culture University of Birmingham, 19 – 21 April 2007 The theme of the Conference is intentionally broad. It will focus on how Europe’s existing structures and practices may evolve in the coming few years and how these may, in turn, be influenced by its cultural and historical heritage. Whilst the EU’s response to the failure of its first attempt to reshape its structure following a phase of massive enlargement offers an obvious starting-point for the discussion, the conference is not limited either in its objectives or to the geographical boundaries of the EU. What it intends to encourage is an open-minded approach to how others see topics that we often consider as embedded in our own discipline. For this purpose the Conference will bring together Lawyers, Political Scientists, Economists, Geographers, Linguists, Literature Specialists, Social Scientists and Historians to think about: Identity, History, Politics and Culture in their relation to the future of Europe. Conference Format A three-day conference with panels on: Culture and Identity Historical Development Security Europe in the World Convergence of Values and Practices Each panel will consist of a mixture of academics and postgraduate students. Additionally, the second day will include a poster session during which all participants can present their work. The provision of drinks and snacks should ensure a free-flowing exchange of opinions and experiences. The Conference will be opened by keynote speakers from politics, the media and the arts. Accommodation, attendance and the conference dinner are free of charge. Paper format Papers will be 20 minutes long, followed by 20 minutes of discussion. Those not selected to give a paper will have the chance to present their research in form of an A0 poster on the second evening. Selected papers will be published on the Graduate Centre for Europe website.
