Please can anyone help with defining two words. "Letters on Leave: Letter I" collected in Abaft the Funnel, p.211, contains the sentence: "What do you, who have seen half a countryside in deadly fear of its life, suppose that this people [Londoners] would do if they were chukkered and gabraowed? I am trying to define chukkered and gabraowed for the NRG, but haven't been able to find a translation of these two words in any glossary or dictionary. I suspected that chukkered might be derived from the polo chukka, but can't see in what sense. Any suggestions will be very gratefully received.
